Great Tragedies and Oedipus

This week we started learning about more of the greek contributions to our modern world, but about one in partucular: the modern tragedy.
This came about when a rich greek man decided to create a play that involved tragedy, and thus the modern tragedy was born.  We all wrote down some examples of tragedies today, such as movies like "The Boy with the Striped Pajamas" or "The Wrestler."  These movies are all examples of tragedies that were influenced by the greeks.

  1. Were they actually influenced by the Greeks specifically? I forget if the Greeks were the inventors of tragedy and therefor all tragedies are a result of their work, or if they created the model for the modern tragedy. In any case, those movies are certainly examples of effective tragedies since I did not even have to see the character development to feel sad for the characters. I think tragedy is a relatively unexplored medium (rarely do you see movies that are TRUE tragedies. i.e. they all end happily), and is certainly one of the best for getting a message across.
